Get ready for a frightfully fun two-days of bubbling reactions, colour-changing potions, ghostly gases, stretchy slime and creepy crystals at IIL spooktacular STEAM science lab!

Young scientists aged 8-13 will step into the STEAM laboratory for a hands-on Halloween adventure packed with chemistry, experiments and discovery. Create incredible colour-changing reactions using red cabbage indicator, make a ghost grow through a chemical reaction, investigate chemo-ween reactions, create monster slime, grow crystal spider webs and discover how everyday materials can produce electricity!

The challenges continue with engineering, glowing LED Halloween circuits and plenty of opportunities to experiment, test, investigate and create.

As each experiment will be about 30 min – 1 hour, here is the outline:

1. Growing ghost – CO₂ reaction
Vinegar and bicarbonate of soda produce carbon dioxide, which inflates a ghost balloon. Campers explore acid-base reactions, gas production and chemical change.

2. Colour-changing witch’s potions
Red cabbage indicator is mixed with substances such as lemon juice, vinegar, bicarbonate solution and diluted soap solution. Children investigate acids, alkalis, indicators and pH through dramatic colour changes.

3. Bubbling potion laboratory
Campers investigate different safe combinations such as citric acid/lemon juice, vinegar and bicarbonate, comparing bubbling and gas production. Focus: reactants, products and evidence of chemical reactions.

4. Monster slime chemistry
Participants create slime and investigate how changing the formulation affects stretch, flow and elasticity. Introduces polymers and cross-linking.

5. Crystal spider webs
Halloween spider-web shapes are placed into a suitable crystal-growing solution to investigate solutions, saturation and crystallisation.

6. Halloween electrochemistry : lemon & potato batteries
Children use copper and zinc electrodes with lemons or potatoes to create simple electrochemical cells, measure voltage and investigate how chemical energy can produce electrical energy.

Practical information

1:45pm-1:55pm: welcome/ registration at IIL

2:00pm-3:30pm: 1st part of afternoon camps

3:30pm-4:00pm: snack and break. An afternoon snack is provided by IIL Camps to all children prior to playtime

4:00pm-5:00pm: 2nd and final part of afternoon camps

5:00pm: end of camps. Parents are kindly asked to pick up their children at the IIL entrance gate, at 5:00pm.

Late pick-up option possible, up to 6:00pm max : +30chf for the 2 days.

Please note that from now on, any delay in collecting your children will result in a charge of CHF 10 per child for every quarter of an hour or part thereof. Thank you for your understanding.

Children attending afternoon camps only will NOT be able to have lunch on site beforehand.

If you would like your child to stay with us for the full day, you may enroll them in a morning camp (AM). Only in this case will they be able to have lunch on site (12:30pm-2:00pm). When registering for the morning camp, you will indeed be able to choose between signing them up for the canteen (additional fee), providing a packed lunch every day for them to eat at IIL (supervision and activities included, no additional fee), or picking them up at 12:30pm and bringing them back by 1:45pm (no additional fee).
